Connecting the Past and the Present

Wednesday 8:00 – 9:15 AM

Session Description

This thought provoking session introduces vital historical information on race & racism, how racial trauma gets passed down, and how racial conditioning affects us at the levels of mind, body, spirit and emotions. This is an essential primer for understanding the true history of race and how we can begin healing ourselves and transforming our relationships and workplaces. Attendees will leave the session inspired and prepared to lead their HR departments and companies forward.

Milagros Phillips

Working with diverse groups including corporate leaders and members of Congress, I have spent the past 20 years facilitating race literacy programs that inform, transform and lead to inspired action. These programs are presented at educational institutions, corporations, and through public seminars. I am a member of the American Ballet Theater (ABT) RISE Advisory Council, as they create greater inclusion in the world of Ballet.

My work comes from lived experience and is backed by historical and scientific research. It comes from walking through the shadow to find my light and in the process, helping others find theirs. What I bring to this work is great compassion, a deep understanding of race, and an awareness of our individual and collective power.

In my 20 years facilitating seminars, I found that people often lacked the information with which to transform. Without the systemic and institutional background of race and racism, it is difficult to get beyond the personal. The missing information associated with race keeps us in a loop of endless repetition.

However, we are not stuck. Race literacy and awareness puts us in the driver’s seat of our lives and allows us to choose differently.

What makes my program unique? RACE Demystified is the only program on race that walks participants through the healing process.

My background uniquely prepared me to do this work. My indoctrination began early as a Black, Latina; I spent my formative years living under a dictatorship in the Caribbean and understand the various forms that oppression takes. I have experienced racism and prejudice in two languages, and understand the impact of both racism and colonization. Moreover, I am committed to compassionate transformation.

Personal & collective development is my calling. Understanding and Healing Racism is the work of my heart.
